You can paddle your canoe from the Lock to West Hythe. If you don’t have a canoe you can rent them at Newenden Bridge and paddle to Bodiam Castle or you could hire rowing boats at Hythe. What more could you want than a gentle row up the canal to a pub for lunch?
Rye
You could spend a relaxing day at the ancient Cinque Port of Rye just 1 mile away. Dating from the Norman Conquest, Rye is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in England and certainly one of the prettiest. You will find some lovely pubs for lunch and local beer such as The Mermaid Inn, The George Inn and Ypres Castle Inn. There are also art galleries, tea shops and antique shops to peruse as you meander through the labyrinth of winding cobbled streets.
You can easily walk or cycle to Rye Harbour which is two miles south of the town where there is a small fishing fleet. The fleet supplies fresh fish and delicious seafood to local restaurants. You could buy some local seafood or fish and take it home to cook and eat at The Lock.
In February there is a famous scallop festival which is well worth a visit.
Romney Marsh
The Romney Marsh countryside is a paradise for walkers, fishing, cyclists and explorers of historic towns, quaint villages, ancient churches and wildlife.
Throughout the centuries life on the Marsh was centred around sheep, smuggling and defending England from invasion.
Romney Marsh embraces vast shingle beaches and flat marshland. This essentially flat area has a character all of its own and contains a truly astonishing wealth of wildlife and landscape features.
Camber Sands
The beautiful beaches at Camber Sands and sand dunes are perfect for families. It is lifeguard supported and perfect for walks along the coastline or picnics amongst the dunes.
Camber is well known as one of the best kitesurfing beaches in the UK. There are miles of sandy, flat beaches and consistent southerly winds throughout the season, it’s a kitesurfing paradise on your doorstep.
For birdwatching enthusiasts, there is a coastal nature reserve with birdwatching hides you can visit at any time of year to see a range of birds, plants and other animals.
Whatever you choose to do during your stay at the Lock Cottage Rye, you will have a memorable time.
