The Royal Military Canal

The Lock Cottage was built by the War Office to house the officers that guarded the Royal Military Canal at the beginning of the 1800s when it was feared that Napoleon was going to invade the South Coast of England. During WWII it was used again by officers guarding the Canal and the approaches to the area.

The present owners great aunt lived here from 1945 until 1991. She was one of the original Marsh Farmers. She earned her living farming just 40 head of sheep.

She was an avid WI member and only ever rode a bicycle!
